Unfortunately, I have witnessed absurdities such as nautical activities sold as «encounters with dolphins» during which no respect is shown to the animals. The cetaceans are frightened by the motors and boats, which are directed straight at them.
Culturally, mass tourism can also be harmful and grotesque. For example, it has become common practice to be offered a coconut at an exorbitant price on a beach - all the authenticity is lost in the face of financial incentive. Although tourism brings in foreign currency and undoubtedly participates in the development of the island, to my mind it is important to preserve local traditions and to promote a more responsible kind of tourism.
Nevertheless, Zanzibar is a magnificent destination with extraordinary anchorages, especially in the southwest of the island. With a multihull, it is still possible to discover the natural beauty of this stopover whilst respecting its environment and local culture.
