Multihulls from 50 to 60 feet

In terms of new arrivals and departures, this category is the most active of all, proof that most builders are trying to establish themselves in this large multihull niche. The 50 to 60-footers include both big production cruising boats and the first semi-custom builds. Hulls of 15 to 18 meters in length also mark the dividing line between two worlds: one of boats that remain manageable privately and short-handed, and the other, of models that require a professional crew. A crewmember or skipper will be part of the setup, to take advantage of the extraordinary qualities of these large multihulls. The boundary is typically seen at 55 feet. In all cases, we’re talking particularly comfortable and/ or high-performance multihulls.

ST FRANCIS 50 MK2

Ready to face every ocean

Building on their experience with the St Francis 44 and 48, the South African manufacturers have launched an even more comfortable and recently improved 50-footer under the name MK2. Though the design might seem quite traditional and the nacelle rather low compared to what is being built in Europe, the St Francis 50 proves to be a very seaworthy catamaran, robust and able to face the worst of the gales. For the interior, the shipyard can meet all the wishes of its customers and ensures an excellent level of finish.

LAGOON 51

The overlapping genoa makes a comeback

The Lagoon 51 is in fact an evolution of the 50. But what’s new about it? We note that the sugarscoops are significantly longer and especially are equipped with a bit of an overhang to facilitate moving around when the catamaran is in port. The raised cockpit and the sunbathing areas, still accessible from both sides, have been transformed into a real flybridge, completed by a front sun lounging space. The builder has also managed to integrate 2.7 kWp of solar panels. The big surprise is that the rig no longer sits atop the coachroof, meaning the sacrosanct self-tacking jib is no more. Lagoon has therefore moved “astern” by stepping its mast at the front of the nacelle.
Inside, the disappearance of the substantial compression post benefits the new nacelle, which adopts an Alpi oak sand finish. Feedback from the 50 (300 examples sold) allowed Lagoon to review 70 points, such as the holding tanks, which are now gravitational (and not under the floors). They have also gone for upholstery made of 100% recycled material and covers made of hemp fiber and partly with biosourced resin. The Lagoon 51 is not yet completely Forever Green but we’re getting there!

LEOPARD 50

A flybridge for everyone

Forerunners with the idea of a forward cockpit, which has since become almost a must-have over the past ten years, architects Simonis & Voogd have optimized the concept and the space aboard this cat which can accommodate up to 5 cabins plus crew. Initially, she was available with or without a flybridge – Leopard 50 L or S. The “with” option constituted 95% of sales, and as a result, the Sport version is no longer offered. The coachroof on the 50 extends forward, protecting the passengers in the forward cockpit – another Leopard feature. This is a successful catamaran that’s comfortable and easy to handle. And has proved to be a commercial success too, with over a hundred examples built so far.

ITA 15.49

Design and performance

Itacatamarans announced the release of their latest model last April - the very first ITA 15.49 was splashed in July. This catamaran is based on the platform of the 14.99, as the beam is identical, and the interior is the same. On the other hand, it features a taller coachroof, extended sugarscoops and much larger hull windows. The builder achieves a neat construction in glass/epoxy sandwich with carbon reinforcements and a high technological level for the onboard systems and the drivetrain.

AURA 51

Attractive, without going over the top

The Aura 51 does not have an island name... but keeps an “a” at the end. This new model has lines very much in keeping with the latest Berret/Racoupeau designed catamarans such as the Samana 59. The superstructure is refined, the bows inverted and the sail plan powerful – this is necessary to compensate for the increased displacement, up 15% compared to its predecessor, the Saba 50. The builder has also kept the double sail maneuvering station/helm at mid-height. As for the innovations to be found aboard, there’s a very large opening between the nacelle and the cockpit with the galley unit going through to the external part, and the possibility of installing 2,000 Wp of solar panels. OUTREMER 52

(Very) Long-haul cruising

For this new 52, whose launch is scheduled for late January 2023, the shipyard was keen to work with naval architects VPLP, along with some of the big names in French design and also with the expertise of the Gunboat shipyard, making it possible to reduce the weight of the structure while retaining its ultimate strength. Like the Outremer 55, the wheel, positioned on the starboard side, can also be placed in a low position in the cockpit to ensure protection from the sun or from bad weather. The two tillers remain a feature at the after end of the hulls. Inside, there’s to be a neat forward-facing bench seat, four openings at the front of the saloon and an XXL-sized bay window that opens onto the cockpit. The Outremer 52 available in three finishes - Life, Nomad and Sportline. Outremer has designed a modular space called My Free Space. Located in the forward port cabin, this space can be arranged in different ways - double cabin, office, workshop, dressing room, etc. The sail area/displacement ratio is comparable to that of its predecessor, the Outremer 51, guaranteeing excellent performance - even upwind thanks to the daggerboards.

SEAWIND 1600 PASSAGEMAKER

Reviewed, updated, improved!

Four years after it was first launched, Seawind’s flagship catamaran was entitled to some particularly significant upgrades in 2021: the height of the nacelle was raised by 2” (5 cm) to improve passage through bigger seas, the platform became more rigid, yet lighter, thanks to the addition of carbon reinforcing, and the hulls were widened by 4” (10 cm) to increase the load capacity and... the width of the berths. The starboard forecabin even has an additional folding bunk and extra storage space. Windows in the hulls have been enlarged, with blinds now recessed, and the finish is in light oak. The 1600 Passagemaker now uses a more energy-efficient and lighter (450 lbs / 200 kg lighter) 24 V electrical system as standard. On deck, it is the new anchoring system on the longitudinal spar that really catches your eye: it has been optimized to facilitate handling the ground tackle, limit the risk of entanglement of any equipment on the anchor itself and to improve weight centering.

Style and performance

The carbon/epoxy sandwich construction uses thermoformed foams to avoid the use of squared foam: this shows the level of care given to this catamaran, which has little to do with mass production. With her steeply inverted bows, curved daggerboards, full equipment and luxurious interior fittings (all sandwich construction), the HH50 is missing nothing found on her bigger sisterships. Built in China, these high-end multihulls are aimed at an enlightened clientele looking for exclusivity, style and exceptional performance. The Sports Cruising model is also available in a clever version called the Ocean Series. While the lines drawn by the talented Morelli-Melvin team remain the same, fiberglass replaces carbon for the hulls; mast and boom are made of aluminum; and the curved daggerboards give way to sensible fixed skegs.

NEEL 52

A trimaran with 4, 5 or 6 cabins

NEEL-TRIMARANS has announced the replacement for the NEEL 51: on the agenda, a finesse at the helm worthy of a racing monohull, but equally suited to every possible use - charter, blue water cruising, and why not racing? The NEEL 52 offers various layouts ranging from 4 to 6 cabins, and even two separate crew accommodation areas. This new model logically abandons the Joubert/Nivelt stamp, taking on that of Marc Lombard Yacht Design – as with the most recent models from the brand. Forward, the three hulls feature a pronounced inverted bow: an excellent way to increase the waterline length without adding any real weight to the multihull – noting that the displacement is kept under control, at just short of 28,000 pounds. The NEEL 52 is capable of carrying almost 7 tons in cruising mode. The builder is planning on launching its new model in September 2023.

The very elaborate design of the coachroof and hull windows, added to the two-color upholstery, sets the tone: Enrico Contreas and Marco Amadio are offering us a chic, elegant and deliberately Italian catamaran! OUTREMER 55

Design, pleasure and performance

The Outremer 55 sits between the 51 and the 5X in the Outremer range. At the helm of the project is the “dream team” that has built the latest models, namely the triumvirate of Patrick Le Quément, Marc Van Peteghem and Franck Darnet. The coachroof is the result of innovative aesthetic research with large, glazed areas on the sides and a large vertical opening forward, that is concealed by rounded uprights. The mast is stepped on the coachroof in order to ensure optimum weight centering. The two helm stations are equipped with movable steering wheels and provide excellent visibility over the water and - on each side - comfortable seating for two people. The cockpit enjoys the protection of a light but well-covered bimini. At the stern, a wide bench seat allows you to make the most of the table, which is itself set back. As for the nacelle, this is home to a large galley with a central island and a forward-facing chart table. The Outremer 55, light and well-canvassed is capable of good speeds under sail - including upwind, close-hauled thanks to her deep daggerboards – from just 5 knots of wind.

DAZCAT OCEAN CRUISER 55

Designed and built by sailors, for sailors

The Cornwall-based manufacturer has decided to refocus its 40 to 55-foot range. Out goes the Dazcat 1095, 1195 and 1895, and we now welcome the launch of the Ocean Cruiser range, with a first model, the 55, just announced. The main feature of this Dazcat is the adoption of a forward cockpit/maneuvering station, with the wheel just behind, at the front of the nacelle. Another helm station is located mid-height, to starboard. This new Dazcat maintains a strict weight schedule, with carefully centered masses, and is able to take the ground thanks to its shoal draft when the appendages (carbon daggerboards) are raised. As for the bimini, this has been designed to optimize the surface area of solar panels, which also largely cover the dinghy on its davits. Optionally, the Ocean Cruiser can be propelled by a hybrid diesel/electric drivetrain.

BALI 5.4

So much better than at home!

On the largest of the Balis, we find the XXL-version of everything that has characterized the brand since its inception. The saloon-cockpit unit becomes a spacious marine terrace thanks to the opening of the big overhead door. The deck extends all the way to the bows, offering an exceptional “tanning area” that is accessible directly from the saloon via a watertight door. The size of this multihull makes it possible to accommodate up to six cabins in the hulls, a must for the charter market. Let’s bet that the spaces and equipment “just like at home” will also win over some private owners. The performance of this giant remains surprising: reasonably loaded, it goes very well upwind by just coming off the wind a little.

The ice or the tropics?

Specialists in aluminum centerboarders for blue water cruising and expedition work, Garcia Yachts are applying their Exploration concept to two hulls with a robust catamaran, but with a controlled weight for interesting performance. It will be good to challenge the ice from the interior watchkeeping/helm station. In the saloon/galley area, a stove is even provided. The insulation is designed for withstanding high latitude sailing and extreme conditions. The aft cockpit is particularly well protected. As for the ergonomics of the sailing maneuvers, it has been carefully designed to be able to handle wearing slippers, whatever the weather.

PUNCH 17.10

The final Punch to be built by the famous Multicap Caraïbes shipyard in Martinique was launched over 10 years ago now... This has been followed by a long period of absence by the brand known for their robust and uncluttered wood/epoxy catamarans. The builder, Christian Hernandez, and naval architects Mortain/Mavrikios have decided to relaunch a complete range. This time, the catamarans are now being built in southern Portugal at Vila Real de Santo António, on the mouth of the Guadiana River. The first drawings available reveal four models – the Punch 12.70, 13.70, 15.10 and lastly, the 17.10. The latter remains very close to the 1700 (see test in MW108). “The former model was built entirely in strip-planking, and it will be the same for this new one,” confirmed Alain Mortain. With a sail area to weight ratio of 12.19 m²/t, the flagship catamaran promises good performance.

XXL Flybridge… or not

Announced at the 2019 Annapolis Boat Show, Majestic’s flagship has been sailing for more than a year now. This catamaran retains a very classic design with cleverly angled bows and multi-tiered superstructures - however you can have one without the giant flybridge. That said, the builder hasn’t skimped on the hull openings and hatches: the sea is visible everywhere and ventilation is provided from the first breath of air. NAVIS 55

For fast cruising and charter

Laurent Ludwiczak, specialist in one-off boat projects through his company Navis, is this year presenting us with a new range that actually goes by the name of Navis. The 55 that we have selected here has very narrow hulls at the front with a marked forefoot and strongly inverted bows. On deck, the nacelle’s footprint is deliberately reduced in order to limit displacement. Associated with a foam sandwich construction, the design promises a laden displacement of around 13½ tons, and you can count two tons less than that in lightship condition. Given the custom principle, the layouts are relatively free, though still require thorough study before construction, as the various bulkheads are structural and therefore contribute to the catamaran’s rigidity. In principle, the starboard hull is dedicated to the Owner. Particular care has been given to the accessibility of the various technical elements. A Navis 60 is also available.

While this imposing 60-foot catamaran discovered at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival may lack finesse in the design of its superstructure, it does offer exceptional overall volume for its size. The same goes for the sunbathing areas, which are absolutely gigantic. In this category, only the Sunreef 60 is able to compete with this new model unveiled at the Cannes show. The big sistership to the 510 is the Signature 580. The family resemblance is clear at first glance: the design team is the same. Aboard this luxury catamaran, an Atlantic crossing becomes a walk in the park, or almost... Our test highlighted the care given to the finish, the quality of the equipment but also the ease of maneuvering. Even though the owner’s cabin is no longer in the central rostrum, it benefits from private access to the forward cockpit, which in line with current trends also enjoys direct access to the saloon.

SIXTY SOLAR SAIL

Optimized for full-comfort blue water cruising

The big sistership of the X5 Plus adopts a relatively conventional design – gone is the big arch around the cockpit. The name Solar reflects the manufacturer’s desire to limit fossil fuel consumption by offering an impressive surface area of solar panels (6 kWp combined with 44 kWh of Lithium-Ion batteries). Some neat touches will improve life when cruising, such as the forward sunbathing area that’s well protected between the coachroof uprights (and equipped with a solar protection if needed), the aft platform equipped with a carbon mini-crane and the large holds and lockers ready to store all the nautical equipment (paddleboards or diving equipment for example). The helm and maneuvering station is elegantly protected by a hard-top, not to mention the rigid handrail that surrounds the entire deck. A semi-custom finish is offered by the manufacturer.

RAPIDO 60

The fastest production multihull?

This trimaran was designed with the aim of reconciling very high performance and comfort. Of course, the living space offered bears no resemblance to catamarans of the same size. The same is true when you compare the Rapido 60 with a NEEL, even a smaller one. Here, the floats remain... simply floats - with still a huge volume of storage. Only the central hull is fitted out - and the width remains quite contained. Nevertheless, this powerful and incredibly fast unit offers exceptional sailing pleasure and is a joy to helm. The polars even show speeds sometimes exceeding 30 knots, quite a program...
