Multihulls from 30 to 40 feet
This category is barely any livelier than the previous one – though that’s not difficult! In addition to the announcement of the Palma 30 Grand Voyageur (classified in the Forever Green category) and the Ventio, we note the arrival of the very promising Bali Catsmart, which is a hit in terms of sales off plan. We are losing the smaller Dazcat and the Corsair 37... Between 30 and 40 feet, cruising catamarans rub shoulders with coastal rally-raid trimarans, but there’s also some really fast boats. Whichever your choice, these multihulls remain on a human scale, easy to handle and easy to maintain.

TRICAT 30

CORSAIR 970

The DNA of the Corsair 31 is still plain to see…

 
 
The Corsair 970 – also known as the Cruze 970 - took over from the Corsair 31 more ten years ago now. Fans of folding trimarans know how much the Corsair 31 left its mark on people’s minds. With more than 300 examples built, it is one of the yard’s best-sellers.
The Corsair 970 didn’t take any unnecessary risks: it was really an evolution of the Corsair 31, but with greater comfort on board, more in line with the Corsair 37. On board the 970, there’s about 15% more space than on the 31 and notably, much better headroom, as you can now stand upright in the saloon... But this comfort in no way hinders the seakeeping qualities of the Cruze 970, which remains a true Corsair trimaran. The Sport, and especially the Carbon, versions are obviously higher performing. It goes without saying that the 970 is foldable, using the system so highly prized by the yard.

DRAGONFLY 32

Long live those wave-piercing floats

The first-generation Dragonfly 32 marked the history of Quorning Boats with more than 50 examples built. The Evolution replaced the Supreme version in 2019, with 20% larger floats and a more powerful rig. The stretched underwater hulls of the floats, the higher volume and the inverted bows are a real plus with a cross-sea or for sporty sailing. Admittedly, at the same price, the Dragonfly 32 Evo offers a third of the living space of an honest 40-foot catamaran, but what are we looking for when we choose this boat? A multihull that can limit her beam to 3.85 m but above all a sporty craft that conceals a wonderful temperament under the pretty exterior and provides a lot of pleasure when sailing. AVENTURA 34

Compact and homely

 
 
Large production runs of catamarans are uncommon below 40 feet. A multihull of less than 10 meters (33 feet) in length has many advantages, however, starting with an attractive price: the new Aventura 34 is no more expensive than many used 40-foot catamarans that have been refurbished... The design of the 34, designed by Lasta Design studio, is successful: the deck layout is also much better than that of the Aventura 33 - the previous model, whose vision over the water from the helm stations was problematic. On board, well-designed facilities to live well for cruising, with a choice of 3 double cabins and 1 bathroom, or 2 double cabins and 2 bathrooms. This semi-offshore catamaran also allows you - with her beam of just 5.30 m (17’5”) - to navigate most of Europe’s inland waterways. Enough to further extend her range of possibilities!

MARLIN 33

From prototype to series production…

 
 
Following many months of testing, both racing and cruising, Bulgarian-based builder Elica is getting ready to begin production of the Marlin 33. This will be a performance trimaran with an all-carbon construction and a weight of only 3,220 lbs (1,460 kg). The multihull was designed by a particularly experienced trio - Jan Andersen, Roland Gaebler and Jan Verroken. The floats have sufficient volume to be able to sail flying a hull - in racing mode, of course... In the same spirit, this trimaran is equipped with twin rudders to always be able to maintain a course. Comfort remains the priority though: the saloon can seat eight people, and there’s 6’5” (1.95 m) of headroom under the companionway hatch. Auxiliary propulsion is provided by an electric motor whose batteries are fed by 450 W of solar panels. The Marlin 33 is foldable and even dismantlable for transport on a trailer. We are planning to test this model for you very soon.

Our test of the Broadblue 346 proved to be an excellent surprise. Despite her short length, This Category A-certified catamaran will allow you to enjoy some beautiful semi-offshore cruising in remarkable comfort, but also navigate inland waterways thanks to her narrower beam. Following numerous requests for a cruising catamaran that was also transportable catamaran (specifically, in a shipping containers), Jean-Noël Lebrun has designed a lighter and beamier model than his Palma, with a large carbon bowsprit. The Ventio has the same hulls as its sibling, but with a larger and completely redesigned nacelle to allow for assembly/disassembly. Each hull houses two cabins. As an option, one bathroom is available. The galley can be placed below decks or in watertight lockers on the nacelle. As for the appendages, the options are either skeg keels or daggerboards.

GEMINI 35 LEGACY

1981: That was the date the first Gemini appeared in the USA. Since then, even though this multihull has evolved well, it’s kept the same spirit. Its singularity lies in having the saloon opening over the hulls, yet all contained within a beam of just 14 feet (4.26 m). So the Legacy 35 is the latest evolution of a catamaran designed above all to offer great comfort on board for the crew. The best bit remains of course the owner’s forward cabin: really neat. We also like the galley in the passageway, which allows more space in the saloon. A classic catamaran, but still as wonderful as ever!

This multihull was presented at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival... and it was a great success, with around 30 units ordered. In Aventura’s sailing range, this model fits between the 34 and the 45 S. On the cruising catamaran market, it joins that very rare sector of boats under 37 feet – there’s the C-Cat 37 and the Excess 11, of course. Our first discovery of the Aventura 37 was a pleasant surprise: though the nacelle has understandably less space, the cockpit is vast. The helm station is set back so as not to interfere with sailing maneuvers – which are grouped just forward of the helm. Up on the bimini, a sunlounger can be used, but only when in port or at anchor, so as to maintain a decent upwind sail area – 1,025 square feet (95 m²). The Aventura 37 is available in a 3 or 4-cabin version and will also be available in a DC (Day Charter) version, capable of accommodating 20 to 28 passengers.

This Marc Lombard design is a real comfortable cruising catamaran, but it doesn’t miss out on offering you real sensations at the helm, and flattering performance. The Italian shipyard offers this multihull in a skeg-keel or daggerboard version, depending on the owner’s choice and the boat’s intended program. The third model in the range, the Excess 11 was presented to the public at Boot Düsseldorf 2019. In the world of multihull cruising, this new model is certainly a must-have from the 2020 vintage. There are two reasons for this: firstly, because her compact size is unusual on the market: most major manufacturers are now starting their range at 40 feet. Second, because this model, like the latest 14, is a “real” new boat - note that the Excess 11 isn’t built in a borrowed Lagoon mold, unlike the 12 and the 15. Fun to helm (especially in the Pulse Line version), enjoyable, comfortable and relatively accessible, the 11 has become a real favorite.

With this model, we start taking a look at the leading manufacturer of liveaboard multihulls - more than 6,000 Lagoons have been built since 1987! During our complete test of the Lagoon 40 back in January 2018, we really liked the boat’s overall balance. The other striking features: a helm with real sensations, with beautiful agility to the platform, resulting from the weight centering efforts, the particular geometry of the aft-set rig and a really efficient sail plan. Easy to handle, pleasant and comfortable, the Lagoon 40 is a fun catamaran to sail in a breeze: we frequently exceeded 15 knots when we sailed more than 250 miles aboard. BALI CATSMART

2, 3 or 4 cabins for the smallest in the Bali range

 
 
Having released a flurry of new models in 2020 and 2021, you might have thought that Bali Catamarans might just ease back a little… But no, the yard is again adding to its range, this time from below, with the announcement of a new 38-foot model. A little sistership for the Bali Catspace, though this catamaran features some new innovations, such as twin helm stations, an optimized sail area with the mainsail almost flush with the coachroof – since there’s no flybridge. On the other hand, you still get the rigid foredeck and the tilting Bali door. As for the interior, it’s no longer just all-charter: the builder does offer the traditional four- and three-cabin versions, but notably, there’s an amazing version with just two owner’s cabins. The Bali Catsmart demonstrates (finally!) the interest of compact multihulls, that are less expensive and easier to maintain than much larger models. The Catsmart joins the ranks of the C-Cat 37, the Excess 11 and the Aventura, and let’s hope that other large shipyards will be presenting similar models!

Since the beginning of 2021, the builder has been offering a revised and updated model. Lighter than the Lagoon 40, the Excess 12 logically comes up with more flattering performance - especially in the Pulse Line version with its taller rig. The two helm stations offer real helming pleasure, but you lose the centralized maneuvering station - you can’t have it all. During our test, we particularly liked the opening bimini and the ease of handling. With the new version, you can also opt for storage in the bimini – now rigid. Also worthy of note, the simple, colorful and functional interior.

In 2020, the smallest sailing model in Fountaine Pajot’s range was created using the Lucia 40’s chassis but adopted inverted bows and a nacelle redesigned in the spirit of the Elba 45. This catamaran remains very habitable for her size, a quality that opens up a very wide program. Taking a crew around the world? The 385S3 is by far the most popular model from British manufacturer Broadblue. The number of blue water journeys aboard this catamaran are endless... The main advantage of the 385S3, regularly updated - is undoubtedly its ease of handling: thanks to the (very) aft-set mast, the mainsail area is reduced and all the lines return to the cockpit. This catamaran is perfectly managed solo or short-handed. Approved for Category A, it is practically unsinkable thanks to watertight bulkheads and its forward and aft buoyancy volumes. The keels are integrally molded and sealed to the hulls, forming a double bottom.

Under sail, the Broadblue Rapier 400 shows great potential and performance that matches her sporty appearance. The nacelle, which at first sight seems rather low, doesn’t slam at all. But it is the life-on-board aspect where the 400 surprises, with a semi-covered saloon/cockpit concept and superb interior layout in the hulls, making this nothing like any other 40-footer on the market. Under way as well as at anchor, the ergonomics work, the flattering silhouette really stands out and living on board this almost open-version is very pleasant. Note the numerous possibilities for customizing this catamaran depending on a more or less cruising or performance-oriented program - the Clubman version shows good racing skills.

The Triac Composites shipyard and the enormous experience of its team produces a wonderful range of high-performance trimarans from 40 to 60 feet out of its base at Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), in Vietnam. The manufacturer has unveiled its latest “little” boat, the Rapido 40. Trick of the light - that’s its name - has shown good average speeds right from its first sail. This model, in the Racer version is boosted with C-foils and a carbon rig. While the central hull has a very narrow beam at the waterline, reasonable volume is nevertheless ensured inside, thanks to a marked chine. The floats are particularly voluminous, obviously guaranteeing good strength. And when you go alongside in port, they fold like a dragonfly: the beam is reduced from 28’10” (8.80 m) at sea down to 17’1” (5.20 m).
