A large Malagasy national park begins at Baly Bay. A river flows into the ocean, lifting a huge amount of sediment. The color of the water does not make swimming very appealing. However, it attracts the lesser flamingos, who enjoy feeding here at low tide, along the muddy bank. Thousands of shrimp are swallowed every day by these voracious pink birds. It is a magnificent spectacle to see them land in harmony. On the other hand, their collective take-off is not so graceful... The sailboats are anchored off the estuary. From the cockpit of our catamaran, we observe the spectacle of the small pink flamingos every evening at sunset, a glass of punch in one hand and the camera in the other! At nightfall, they return to the mangrove, where they will wait for the next low tide to feast on the small shrimp.
