CORSAIR 970 - The DNA of the Corsair 31 is plain to see…

The Corsair 970 – also known as the Cruze 970 - took over from the Corsair 31 ten year ago. Fans of folding trimarans know how much the Corsair 31 left its mark on people’s minds. With more than 300 units built, it is one of the yard’s best-sellers. The Corsair 970 didn’t take any unnecessary risks: it was really an evolution of the Corsair 31, but with greater comfort on board, more in line with the Corsair 37. On board the 970, there’s about 15% more space than on the 31 and notably, much better headroom, as you can now stand upright in the saloon... But this comfort in no way hinders the seakeeping qualities of the Cruze 970, which remains a true Corsair trimaran. The Sport, and especially the Carbon, versions are obviously higher performing. It goes without saying that the 970 is foldable, using the system so highly prized by the yard.

DRAGONFLY 32/DRAGONFLY 32 EVOLUTION - Long live those wave-piercing floats!
Test MW167
2019 Multihull of the Year Winner

The first-generation Dragonfly 32 marked the history of Quorning Boats with more than 50 units built. The Evolution replaced the Supreme version in 2019, with 20% larger floats and a more powerful rig. The stretched underwater hulls of the floats, the higher volume and the inverted bows are a real plus with a cross-sea or for sporty sailing. Admittedly, at the same price, the Dragonfly 32 Evo offers a third of the living space of an honest 40-foot catamaran, but what are we looking for when we choose this boat? A multihull that can limit her beam to 12’7” (3.85 m) but above all a sporty craft that conceals a wonderful temperament under the pretty exterior and provides a lot of pleasure when sailing.
Builder: Quorning Boats
Length: 32’2”/32’6” (9.80/9.90 m)

AVENTURA 34 - Compact and homely

Large production runs of catamarans are uncommon below 40 feet. A multihull of less than 33’ (10 m) in length has many advantages, however, starting with an attractive price: the new Aventura 34 is no more expensive than many used 40-foot catamarans that have been refurbished... The design of the 34, designed by Lasta Design studio, is successful: the deck layout is also much better than that of the Aventura 33 - the previous model, whose vision over the water from the helm stations was problematic. On board, well-designed facilities to live well for cruising, with a choice of 3 double cabins and 1 bathroom, or 2 double cabins and 2 bathrooms. This semi-offshore catamaran also allows you - with her beam of just 17’5” (5.30 m) - to navigate most of Europe’s inland waterways. Enough to further extend her range of possibilities!

MARLIN 33 - From prototype to series production…
2022 Multihull of the Year Nominee

Following many months of testing, both racing and cruising, Bulgarian- based builder Elica is getting ready to begin production of the Marlin 33. This will be a performance trimaran with an all-carbon construction and a weight of only 3,220 lbs (1,460 kg). The multihull was designed by a particularly experienced trio - Jan Andersen, Roland Gaebler and Jan Verroken. The floats have sufficient volume to be able to sail flying a hull - in racing mode, of course... In the same spirit, this trimaran is equipped with twin rudders to always be able to maintain a course. Comfort remains the priority though: the saloon can seat eight people, and there’s 6’5” (1.95 m) of headroom under the companionway hatch. Auxiliary propulsion is provided by an electric motor whose batteries are fed by 450 W of solar panels. The Marlin 33 is foldable and even dismantlable for transport on a trailer.

BROADBLUE 346 - Approved for ocean passagemaking
Test MW162

Our test of the Broadblue 346 proved to be an excellent surprise. Despite her short length, This Category A-certified catamaran will allow you to enjoy some beautiful semi-offshore cruising in remarkable comfort, but also navigate inland waterways thanks to her narrower beam. Under sail, the Broadblue was responsive and agile in light airs (7.3 knots of boatspeed in less than 10 knots of wind) and above all disconcertingly easy to handle with her aft-set rig. On board, with headroom of 6’7” (2 m), double cabins and bathroom, you could live aboard, and for a particularly attractive price!

GEMINI 35 LEGACY - Owner’s cabin forward and galley in the passageway

1981: That was the date the first Gemini appeared in the USA. Since then, even though this multihull has evolved well, it’s kept the same spirit. Its singularity lies in having the saloon opening over the hulls, yet all contained within a beam of just 14 feet (4.26 m). So, the Legacy 35 is the latest evolution of a catamaran designed above all to offer great comfort on board for the crew. The best bit remains of course the owner’s forward cabin: really neat. We also like the galley in the passageway, which allows more space in the saloon. A classic catamaran, but still as wonderful as ever!

AVENTURA 37 - A long-awaited coastal cruiser
Test MW181

This multihull was presented at the Cannes Yachting Festival... and it is already becoming a great success, with around thirty units now on order. This new model in the Aventura range fits in between the 34 and the 44. And on the cruising catamaran market, it joins that very rare sector of boats under 37 feet – there’s the C-Cat 37 and the Excess 11, of course. Our first discovery of the Aventura 37 was a pleasant surprise: though the nacelle has understandably less space, the cockpit is vast. The helm station is set back so as not to interfere with sailing maneuvers – which are grouped just forward of the helm. Up on the bimini, a sunlounger can be used, but only when in port or at anchor, so as to maintain a decent upwind sail area – 1,025 sq ft (95 m²). The Aventura 37 is available in a 3 or 4-cabin version and will also be available in a DC - Day Charter - version

TF10 - Foils for an experienced crew
Test MW160

This foiling trimaran is made in prepreg carbon fiber with a Nomex honeycomb core for a light, safe and robust construction. The TF10 is designed to be handled by a competent crew of four or five sailors. If you dream of flying, this is the ultimate device you need. As proof, our tester’s assessment: “It’s one of the most exciting, reasonably sized wind machines in the world!”. The TF10’s small size and light displacement allow it to be transported on a trailer and assembled and launched from a simple boat ramp.

IC36 - Carbon everywhere, making it feather-weight

The IC36 that we’ve been waiting to see for many months now is one of those multihulls as original as it is exciting. The boat was on display just a short walk from Cannes’ famous La Croisette boulevard and is a real eye-catcher with its modest size, carbon everywhere, its rotating mast, its completely open nacelle and its central galley table. The hulls are still fitted out, don’t worry! During this very first visit, we were hugely impressed by the quality of construction and the quality of finish from the Czech manufacturer. As announced, this dismountable and transportable catamaran (on a trailer but also in a container) is equipped as standard with an Oceanvolt electric drivetrain - recharging is ensured thanks to solar panels and hydrogeneration. This model is also available in the Pacer version, equipped with diesel engines.

EXCESS 11 - A concentrate of pleasure
Test MW171

The third model in the range, the Excess 11 was presented to the public at boot Düsseldorf 2019. In the world of multihull cruising, this new model is certainly a must-have from the 2020 vintage. There are two reasons for this: firstly, because her compact size is unusual on the market: most major manufacturers are now starting their range at 40 feet. Second, because this model is a “real” new boat - note that the Excess 11 isn’t built in a borrowed Lagoon mold, unlike the 12 and the 15. Fun to helm (especially in the Pulse Line version), enjoyable, comfortable and relatively accessible, this new 11 is becoming a real favorite.

C-CAT 37 - Attractive design and wide-ranging program
Test MW166

This Marc Lombard design is a real comfortable cruising catamaran, but it doesn’t miss out on offering you real sensations at the helm, and flattering performance. Congratulations also due for the weight centering effort - essential for a unit with a limited length. The Italian shipyard offers this multihull in a skeg-keel or daggerboard version, depending on the owner’s choice and the boat’s intended program. The C-Cat 37 can therefore be used as much for blue water cruising as for day-racing.

CORSAIR 37 - A timeless trimaran
Test MW105

This fast and foldable cruising trimaran was launched over 10 years ago. Given that this 37 is itself directly derived from the 36, the previous model, the design is understandably a little dated, though the Corsair 37 remains surprisingly fast and always pleasant to helm. The design of the central hull is a success, combining a narrow waterline beam with an on-deck volume suitable for a cruising program. This model is available in a carbon version for increased stiffness and reduced displacement.

EXCESS 12 NOUVELLE GÉNÉRATION - A new version, but still with the Targa bimini!
Test MW171
2020 Multihull of the Year Winner

Since the beginning of 2021, the builder has been offering a revised and updated model. Lighter than the Lagoon 40, the Excess 12 logically comes up with more flattering performance - especially in the Pulse Line version with its taller rig. The two helm stations offer real helming pleasure, but you lose the centralized maneuvering station - you can’t have it all. During our test, we particularly liked the opening bimini and the ease of handling. With the new version, you can also opt for storage in the bimini – now rigid. Also worthy of note, the simple, colorful, and functional interior.

MAINE CAT 38 - Feather-weight and semi-open nacelle

Maine Cat has been building catamarans for almost 30 years now. Based on the US east coast, the shipyard has specialized in composites since 1993, and offers a range of three models - the Maine Cat 30, 38 and 41. These three multihulls share the concept of an open nacelle, not dissimilar to that of the Rapier. The 38 is particularly attractive with its sleek hulls - refined by inverted bows -, a protective rail close to the deck, but above all a very marked chine. Very light and well-canvassed, the Maine Cat 38 is fun to helm and is easily managed single-handed. The shipyard offers packs so that you can start your own adventure earlier and complete the equipment later.

TROPICAL 36 - Power and wind: here’s to the modern motorsailer!

Designed and conceived outside the flows of mainstream marketing, the Tropical 36 offers an innovative response to the specifications of a small cruising catamaran. Featherweight, fully open saloon and cockpit, powerful outboards (up to 2 x 50 HP) giving up to 15 knots under power, lifting rudder blades and engine legs for beaching, central helm station doubled up by two tillers, this Tropical knows how to attract attention! LAGOON 40 - Fun to helm in a breeze
Test MW157

With this model, we start taking a look at the leading manufacturer of liveaboard multihulls - no less than 6,000 Lagoons have been built since 1987! During our complete test of the Lagoon 40 back in January 2018, we really liked the boat’s overall balance. The other striking features: a helm with real sensations, with beautiful agility to the platform, resulting from the weight centering efforts, the particular geometry of the aft-set rig and a really efficient sail plan. Easy to handle, pleasant and comfortable, the Lagoon 40 is a fun catamaran to sail in a breeze: we frequently exceeded 15 knots when we sailed more than 250 nautical miles aboard. A reasonable catamaran that’s versatile and well-designed, she will delight a couple or a family wandering the oceans or around the coast.

SEAWIND 1190 - Lighter, and therefore faster

Developed in 2017 from the famous 1160, of which more than 150 are sailing all around the world, the Seawind 1190 Sport is a more performance- oriented catamaran than her predecessvor. The weight savings are impressive, especially in the Sport version - 20% compared to the 1160! That almost two tons, and that’s immediately noticeable under sail. We also like the electric outboard motors and the simplicity of use of a catamaran whose hulls are still as efficient as ever.

ISLA 40 - More modern inverted bows
Test MW174

In 2020, the smallest sailing model in Fountaine Pajot’s range was created using the Lucia 40’s chassis but adopted inverted bows and a nacelle redesigned in the spirit of the Elba 45. A lounger next to the saloon, perfect for night watches, and a chart table centered under the electric panel - and in fact much closer to the helm station. This catamaran remains very habitable for her size, a quality that opens up a very wide program. Taking a crew around the world? Why not... the Isla is a true ocean cruiser, she moves well in light airs and can take on a sea, all while maintaining comfort and good pace.

BROADBLUE 385S3 - Catamarans? They’re easy!

The 385S3 is by a long way the most popular model from British manufacturer Broadblue. The number of blue water journeys aboard this catamaran are endless... The main advantage of the 385S3, regularly updated - is undoubtedly its ease of handling: thanks to the (very) aft-set mast, the mainsail area is reduced, and all the lines return to the cockpit. This catamaran is perfectly managed solo or short-handed. Approved for Category A, it is practically unsinkable thanks to watertight bulkheads and its forward and aft buoyancy volumes. The keels are integrally molded and sealed to the hulls, forming a double bottom.

NAUTITECH 40 OPEN MK2 - An “Open” that can hold its own at sea!
Test MW158

This catamaran is a success: seaworthy and efficient, the saloon/cockpit space offering an area with an impressive volume for a boat of this size. During our test of this new version, we really liked the very ergonomic deck layout allowing us to easily manage this multihull suited to families or couples looking for a comfortable, and seaworthy platform - but also capable of good top speeds if kept light. Since 2018, the Nautitech 40 Open has been available with new interior layouts that are particularly pleasant to live in, both at sea and at anchor.

F40-XX - Three versions with the same successful design
Delta Catamarans has launched a brand-new multihull in Italy, the F40-XX. The originality of this catamaran (beyond the very refined design) lies in the three versions proposed by the yard: Sports, Charter and Excellence, for demanding owners. Note the single, covered space between the saloon and cockpit that allows a generous amount of light to enter. The builder is also announcing a F50-XX, featuring equally nice lines.

RAPIER 400 - A cabriolet catamaran
Test MW154

Under sail, the Broadblue Rapier 400 shows great potential and performance that matches her sporty appearance. The nacelle, which at first sight seems rather low, doesn’t slam at all. But it is the life-on-board aspect where the 400 surprises, with a semi-covered saloon/cockpit concept and superb interior layout in the hulls, making this nothing like any other 40-footer on the market. Under way as well as at anchor, the ergonomics work, the flattering silhouette really stands out and living on board this almost open-version is very pleasant. Note the numerous possibilities for customizing this catamaran depending on a more or less cruising or performance-oriented program - the Clubman version shows good racing skills.

RAPIDO 40 - A fast and folding trimaran!

This 40-foot trimaran looks likely set its GPS alight, with its C-shaped foils and carbon rig - in Racer version. The central hull has a very narrow waterline beam. A reasonable volume is still ensured thanks to a very marked chine. The floats, which are particularly voluminous, are obviously a guarantee of power. And they fold back, for when in port: the sailing beam of 28’10” (8.80 m) decreases to 16’5” (5.00 m).

BALI CATSPACE - Optimized for full-comfort cruising
Test MW173 & 180

Though the Catspace is the smallest of the Balis, it is far from being the least ambitious: offers four cabins and ten berths in a length of just 40 feet. As a bonus, a gigantic flybridge, unusual in this size. On the lower deck, the areas are designed to be used to the maximum thanks to the integrated deck. However, careful construction allows the displacement to be kept to 9.2 t lightship. To fully enjoy cruising, Bali will equip their Catspaces with impressive tanks. And refrigerated volume is not to be outdone, at 9.35 cu ft (265 liters). This model, launched almost two years ago, is available in a three or four-cabin version. An excellent platform for family cruising, as we were able to experience for ourselves during a 400-nm test back in the summer.
