GR60 - Wind, sunshine, and fuel cells

Behind GR are the initials of Gilles Reigner, the owner of Catathai - who wants to validate a second brand that is both green and high-end. With a doctorate in physics, this Frenchman living in Thailand is well placed to manage a 100% electric powercat project whose energy production is ensured by wind generators and solar panels. The GR60 guarantees a cruising speed of 7 knots and a top speed of 18 knots thanks to a pretty wide range of technical solutions - fuel cells (4 x 5 kWh), high efficiency wind generators (2 x 10 kWh), a large surface area of solar panels (totaling 15 kWh), powerful electric motors and, of course, a large battery bank (between 100 and 200 kWh). The design of this powercat calls for a careful lightweight sandwich construction associated with very fine hulls and optimized aerodynamics. The interior layout and the deck plan are customizable according to the wishes of the owner.

60 Sunreef Power - Luxury ocean passagemaker
Test in Special Issue #17
2022 Multihull of the Year Nominee

This may be the “smallest” powercat in the Polish shipyard’s Power range, but it already has all the attributes of an ultra-modern multiyacht. Easy to handle, this luxury catamaran can be sailed with or without crew. Thanks to its large beam, the 60 Sunreef Power offers an extremely spacious saloon. On the same level as the aft cockpit, this large semi-open space is fully customizable and bathed in sunlight thanks to a skylight and panoramic glazing. The large volumes of the lower deck can be customized to suit the sailing program and lifestyle of the individual owner. The hydraulic platform offers a relaxation area close to the water, perfect for watersports. The figures are of course a little out of the ordinary, with more than 3,000 miles of range, or a 345 sq ft (32 m²) flybridge equipped with a jacuzzi…

MC59P - Full carbon

The hulls of this upcoming MC59P are reminiscent of those of the sailing catamarans produced by the shipyard, and the material is the same (carbon), so the performance will undoubtedly be just as flattering - 26 knots announced. The nacelle extends significantly forward here: a cockpit replaces the trampoline. The layout is very much inspired by the MC55 sail, in particular the huge saloon largely open, aft, which makes it possible to do away with the cockpit itself. But it is forward that the big change is taking place, with the addition of a central owner’s cabin. The view over the water promises to be exceptional…

Horizon 60PC - Making her marks in the United States

Almost 30 units built for a 60-foot powercat: a more than respectable result from a commercial point of view. This model, produced in the United States, features a relatively classic design, very motoryacht-like with inclined bows and almost enclosed flybridge - a true upper deck in a way. You can opt for an open flybridge, however. The deck line that rises up in the middle of the hulls is also in keeping with motoryacht culture - as such, it lends the 60PC an original outline among 60-foot multiyachts. Construction and finish are all completed to a very high standard. The Horizon PC60 can be customized on request.

Iliad 60 - Ready for blue water cruising
2022 Multihull of the Year Nominee

The young Sino-Australian brand is announcing a new 60, ahead of an 80- or 90-footer. On board this long-distance cruiser, the emphasis has been placed on controlling fuel consumption, and this has led to increasing the range to over 3,500 nm. The Iliad 60 is therefore capable of ocean passage-making: with a bridgedeck clearance of 3’9” (1.15 m), it also reflects an architectural design optimized for comfort in the open sea. Moving around on deck is easy, as is access to the huge flybridge. Whether open or fully enclosed, the flybridge can accommodate up to ten people in luxurious comfort and has a separate galley complete with refrigerator, ice maker, grill/barbecue etc. As for the cabins, they each include large bathrooms and beautiful openings to enjoy the sea. The hull dedicated to the owner can integrate a laundry room, a workshop, an office area, or even separate crew quarters with access from the bow. Launch is imminent.

MC63P - 36 knots top speed!

The first example, already in build, picks up on some of the design elements from the MC60, such as the angled deck edge, and the aft-set nacelle/bimini assembly. But the hulls, in the forward section, still gain in freeboard and feature a second chine. The trampoline disappears, replaced by a rigid deck. The MC63P adopts high-tech construction: carbon/foam/ epoxy on all levels to obtain a rigid and lightweight platform. Two 875 horsepower engines provide a cruising speed of 20 knots, and 36 knots top speed thanks to the addition of semi-foils. The interior has been particularly well thought-out and comes in three versions, with three or four cabins. Large windows - panels and doors - are retractable in order to completely decompartmentalize the nacelle in fine weather. Two flybridge configurations are also available. And McConaghy have also announced an MC75 and a 100.

Class 6 Power - Fuel consumption reduces to one quart per mile

O Yachts, based in Latvia, have launched a power version of their Class 6. After two years of sea trials, the builder has validated the original “Smart Hybrid” powertrain (the builder’s GTS version). In other words, an electric engine in one hull, a diesel engine in the other. The idea is to take advantage of all the benefits of electric propulsion - no pollution, no noise pollution, the possibility of sailing in protected areas - and of the longer offshore range guaranteed by the diesel propulsion. The fineness of the hulls, combined with a displacement of 11.5t (25,350 lbs), ready to sail, thanks to the composite/carbon construction, allows for minimal consumption: one liter (just over ¼ US gallon) per nautical mile at 9 knots! A “Full Electric” GTE version is also available. All sorts of customization are possible: traditional diesel motors, solar panels, a rig with a short mast, kite wings, and even a hydrofoiling version with an unprecedented hull form that gives a cruising speed of 18 knots and a 30-knot top speed.

Serenity 64 - Retractable bimini

So what’s the winning recipe for the Serenity 64? American marketing and Turkish production. The designers chose to offer a hybrid engine combining two electric and two internal combustion engines: a reassuring and environmentally friendly choice. While the layout is fairly traditional, much attention has been paid to its quality. But what amazed us was the ingenious rigid bimini entirely covered with solar panels, which lowers to the point of almost covering the huge flybridge to reduce air draft and/ or windage.

Power 67 - Long-haul luxury
Test in Special Issue #17

Deprived of boat shows last year, the Power 67 was finally able to make her global debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. Unlike the Motor Yacht range, designed specifically to be motor boats, the Power 67 is a catamaran developed using as a base the flagship of the Fountaine Pajot sailing fleet, the Alegria 67. The hull has of course been optimized to meet the specific requirements of multipowers, and to support the power of the engines, which range from 2 x 300 HP to 2 x 435 HP. This is enough to offer speed enthusiasts a wide range of top speeds of over 20 knots, even if the main interest of this type of unit is to go along between 10 and 15 knots in remarkable comfort. Another specific feature is that the Power 67 version offers a flybridge designed 100% for life on board, with the area dedicated to sail handling being reorganized to offer new spaces.

Lagoon Sixty 7 - Everything about her says superyacht...
Test in MW170

This was one of the great new powercats of 2019... First of all, because of her imposing size, but also because this model, the baby sister to the SIXTY 8 was eagerly awaited by potential buyers. The objective of the SIXTY 7 is clearly to attract owners of superyachts of 100 feet and over, bored with the high costs and complicated management of their vessel. Lagoon was therefore keen to offer this clientele a more compact powercat that requires a smaller crew. However, comfort has nothing to envy that on a superyacht, even if the famous suspended terrace of the owner’s cabin of the SEVENTY 8, the flagship of the range, is no longer incorporated. The SIXTY 7, on the other hand, retains the same sleek design. She also offers an exceptional level of finish.

Sunreef Supreme 68 Power - Better than a villa by the sea!

The Supreme range with its angular design is available in both sailboats and motoryachts - but it is the latter that is really targeted by the concept. Everything has been optimized to obtain record living space of 3,230 sq ft (300 m²) including a main deck and a flybridge of 700 sq ft (65 m²) each. The interior can be fitted out to suit your requests and without any constraints, as the volumes are similar to those of a house. The layout makes it possible to have the largest living space in the category in this size, then to decorate it as you like, assisted by the interior design studio set up by the yard. The 20’ x 20’ (6 x 6 m) garage can accommodate a 16’ (5 m) tender and two jet-skis.

Iliad 70 - 2,000-nautical mile range
Test in Special Issue #15

Three deck levels and à la carte comfort are in store aboard this luxury multiyacht. Testing the Iliad 50 had already seriously impressed journalist Kevin Green, but this unit definitely won over our Australian correspondent. He discovered the true seaworthy character of a catamaran designed for taking the ground with her reinforced skeg keels and shaft-driven props. Well powered, she manages to exceed the symbolic figure of 20 knots. And at her 8-knots cruising speed, offers a range of 2,000 nautical miles. Inside, the raised Owner’s cabin wins all the votes.
