A record and then an abandonment for the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild!
The Ultim Gitana 17 and its 6-man crew had just beaten the absolute record between Ushant (off Brittany, France) and the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa (11 days 09h 53min). But hardly had they had time to dedicate this record time to their sponsor, who passed away suddenly at his home in Switzerland while the crew were at sea, when they had to abandon their attempt on the record due to rudder damage.

Crossing into the fierce Indian Ocean at 35 knots, the starboard rudder stock, to leeward, suffered damage that would have been irreparable at sea. This is a huge disappointment for Franck Camas and Charles Caudrelier and their crew, who at this point on the course had a lead of more than 850 miles over Francis Joyon's record, and the weather conditions to come were looking favorable, at least in the medium term. After Thomas Coville's team Sodebo also abandoned at about the same spot and for a similar reason, there’s no doubt that the rudders will be the focus of attention for the Ultims teams over the coming weeks.
