The history of sailing in general - and of multihulls in particular - is inseparable from that of racing. Even the youngest among you have heard of the legendary finish of the 1978 Route du Rhum: that year, Mike Birch and his small 36-foot (11-meter) yellow trimaran beat Michel Malinovski at the helm of Kriter V, a 70-foot (21-meter) monohull. The difference at the finish line: a mere 98 seconds!

Today, these big races and great ocean records always make us dream: we couldn’t resist the offer of taking in the sea spray aboard a MOD70 in Australian waters. Admittedly, such sailing is, for the great majority of us, inaccessible. And for this year, 2020, it hasn’t been easy to compete with other multihulls: most of the major events have been cancelled or postponed. It is precisely the more modest regattas, less dependent on powerful sponsors, which could be the winners here. A few motivated crews, a sailing club, a race committee, and off we go!
