LAGOON 46

Here is the latest boat from Lagoon, a 46-foot catamaran which is going to have the difficult task of replacing the 450, the most-sold cruising catamaran, with 746 Fly versions plus around a hundred S versions in the water. After the 39 and the 52, then the 42, 40 and 50, the Lagoon 46 again uses the aft-positioned rig, which has shown its advantages and its potential. You will be able to discover the full test we carried out on the no1 prototype of the Lagoon 46 in this edition of Multihulls World. A boat which appeals through its volumes and accommodation, but one which also offers performance under sail and versatility which will appeal to family crews, cruising on the oceans…

NEW 45 FP

As is now usual, the new Fountaine Pajot catamaran is for the moment known under its code name ‘New 45’. It replaces the Helia 44 in the range, and the New 45 picks up the features of the latest boats from the builder (Lucia and Astrea). Aboard, we find an impressive volume, bathed in light and particularly pleasant to live in. The new steering position is both convivial – it is close to the cockpit, as well as the area called the Lounge deck, which is found on top of the coachroof – and practical, with all the control lines within reach. The forward cockpit is also a nice comfortable area, which should be popular in the anchorage. Finally, we find the genuine (optional) ‘beach’ offered by the hydraulic rear platform.

ITA 14.99
Discovered at the last Cannes Yachting Festival, the Ita 14.99 is a very beautiful ocean cruising catamaran, designed to be sailed by a couple or a shorthanded crew, while offering nice interior services and performance worthy of a powerful boat. Deep daggerboards, a generous sail area, high-tech construction in carbon-epoxy – the catamaran has enough to cover the miles at good average speeds. The no1 is in the water, and the nos 2 and 3 are under construction. Note the builder's choice to offer the boat as standard with hybrid electric propulsion (Oceanvolt). DUFOUR 48

Dufour marks its return to the catamaran world with a brand-new 48-foot boat designed by Umberto Felci. It picks up the company’s main features with the hull lines with a reveal, the shape of the portlights and a clear deck plan, to enjoy the boat to the full. The mast is positioned well aft, which allows a 72m² mainsail and a 48m² self-tacking jib to be offered, which will greatly simplify maneuvers. The Dufour 48 offers a large flybridge, two sunbathing areas forward and a functional cockpit, the perfect extension to the saloon. ASTREA 42

The new catamaran from Fountaine Pajot is undeniably a successful boat (see our full test in Multihulls World 161). It’s a nice comfortable and (technically) accessible long-term cruising boat. The relationship between the ease of handling, the maneuverability in crowded marinas and the (interior-exterior) services is remarkable. Quite furtive, so it can slip into little Greek ports; agile and seaworthy enough to roll out long, wild blue wakes or more peaceful raids, Astrea is a multihull full of qualities. A particular mention for its accommodation, which is really exceptional!

EXCESS CATAMARANS

Officially announced at the last Cannes Boat Show, Excess Catamarans is a new brand, designed and built by the Beneteau Group – already owners of Lagoon.
The idea is to offer a full complementary range to Lagoon (current world no1) with a positioning clearly more oriented towards performance under sail. Designed by VPLP, the new arrival will be equipped with two steering wheels, situated at the back of the hulls. A boat for having fun under sail, while remaining pleasant to live aboard, both at anchor and on long passages. To date, the builder is only giving information in dribs and drabs…

NEEL 47

Neel is going to be presenting a brand-new trimaran designed by Marc Lombard, the Neel 47, in April, at the International Multihull Show. Once again on the 47, we find the famous ‘cockloon’, the generous area which opens completely to offer a large open space between the saloon and the cockpit, or separate, protected areas. The owner’s cabin is situated on the same level, on the platform; it offers an incredible view over the anchorage. With a clever set of sliding bulkheads, it opens easily onto the saloon… Magic, with a 270° view over the surroundings!
Finally, the floats are also fitted out, and offer totally independent suites.

DRAGONFLY 40

You will have to wait until May 2019 to discover the brand-new boat designed by Jens Quorning, the Dragonfly 40. This folding trimaran – an obligation for the Danish builder - is going to become the flagship of the Dragonfly fleet. The program targeted by its architect-builder is ocean cruising. With this aim in mind, the builder has put the accent on ease of handling, even as a shorthanded crew, as is often the case when blue-water cruising. We particularly appreciate the two steering wheels, which give the trimaran a racing look, and we can trust the builder to offer accommodation worthy of its reputation!

F40 XX

Delta Catamarans has just launched a brand-new boat, the F40-XX, in Italy. This catamaran’s originality – beyond its very neat design – comes from the three versions being offered by the builder. You have the choice between a sporty version, a charter version putting the emphasis on the living areas and volumes aboard, and finally an ‘Excellence’ version, for demanding owners. But the F40-XX’s ‘must’, is of course its single area between the saloon and the cockpit, covered by a coachroof which lets in generous amounts of light.

Catathai specializes in building seaworthy boats which are easy to sail and maintain during a long-term voyage. This is of course also the case for this Andaman 49, designed by Fortabat Yacht Design. Aboard this attractive catamaran, weight centering has been optimized and the sail plan is tall and powerful, to obtain good performance. The aim is to cruise under sail, even in light airs, whilst offering a large load carrying capacity, thanks to carefully studied hull shapes…

AVENTURA 44

Aventura continues the renewal of its range of catamarans, and for 2019 is offering this brand-new boat designed by Lasta Design. The Aventura 44 is the biggest vessel built by the company, which is getting straight into blue-water cruising boats. Aboard, we find once again the saloon/cockpit concept dear to the builder, and generous accommodation, to offer real comfort both under sail and in the anchorage. We thus find a 3 or 4 cabin version, with 2 or 4 heads, to meet the needs of the greatest number of owners. With its longitudinally stepped hulls and sandwich construction, the Aventura 44 offers a lot of volume, while limiting the weight – a guarantee of good performance under sail.

We are very familiar with the basis of this boat, which has been developed in a 40 then a 44-foot version. The builder is still offering its catamarans on a fully-custom basis, allowing each owner to personalize his or her boat. The Hybrid version really is ready to leave, and is equipped with two electric motors, two generators, solar panels and a bank of lithium-ion batteries, to be completely independent. OUTREMER 45/4X
In the Outremer family, the 45 is a mythical boat. The first generation 45 was THE long-term cruising boat par excellence at the beginning of the 2000s, delighting numerous voyaging families. The current 45 is a Barreau / Neuman design, much more liveable than its predecessor but retaining the Outremer DNA - daggerboards and reduced weight for performance, while offering genuine comfortable accommodation. The builder is offering the 45 in an even sportier version, with the more generously canvassed, lighter 4X… A catamaran which succeeds in brilliantly combining pleasure at the helm, liveability and comfort when cruising long-term. LAGOON 40

During our full test of the Lagoon 40 (see Multihulls World no 157) we appreciated the boat’s overall balance. Balance at the helm, with real feel, balance of the platform linked to the special geometry of the aft-positioned rig, and balance of the really efficient sail plan. Easy to handle, pleasant and comfortable, the Lagoon 40 is in addition a fun boat to sail in a good breeze, as we even reached 15 knots during our passage of over 200 miles aboard. A boat which will delight a couple or a family roaming the Atlantic, and looking for a versatile, well-designed boat.

This catamaran is a real success: seaworthy and fast, it offers impressive volume for a boat of this size, with its all-in-one saloon/cockpit area. During our test of this new version (see Multihulls World no 158) we particularly appreciated the very ergonomic deck plan, allowing easy handling of this boat, suited to families or couples looking for a pleasant, seaworthy, comfortable ocean cruising boat.

With the Leopard 45, the builder is offering an attractive boat which will satisfy the expectations of both charter customers and demanding owners looking for a boat in which to sail far and for a long time. During our test (see Multihulls World no 156) we appreciated the pertinent hull design, allowing this 45-footer to sail particularly well, and offering a remarkable balance of the platform. LUCIA 40

The Lucia 40 is a real success, and the number of boats sold shows the concept’s relevance. This boat is very liveable for a 40-footer, its accommodation is modern and the design is particularly successful. The build quality allows it to cross the cruising seasons serenely, and both its size and its specifications open up a very wide program, which could even take you round the world with no problems. SEAWIND 1260

In Seawind’s range, the 1260 is the boat which is clearly oriented towards blue-water cruising. Aboard, you will have the choice between different accommodation arrangements, including one with the galley ‘down’, or more classically, ‘up’ in the saloon. In addition, the catamaran can be equipped with three or four double cabins, depending on its owner’s choice. The Seawind’s other distinctive feature is the famous door separating the saloon and the cockpit – a system we already find on the builder’s 1160 – which disappears into the top of the coachroof, and thus frees up a gigantic living area at anchor, or under way in fine weather.

DAZCAT 1295

Darren Newton, the designer of the Dazcats, likes to validate his choices after a launch, by racing his boats – even those, like this Dazcat 1295, which are oriented towards ocean cruising. Because the Dazcat 1295 is capable of cruising far and for a long time with a shorthanded crew, but also of being the fastest boat in a race around the cans! It must be said that both designer and builder have worked hard to optimize the weight centering, which can be felt immediately under sail. As for all the boats in the Dazcat range, each owner can have the boat of his or her dreams built according to their program.

SAONA 47

Between the New 45 which we will discover in 2019 and the excellent Saba 50, Fountaine Pajot has succeeded in the master stroke of positioning a 47-foot boat which has an enormous number of selling points to put forward. The version we tested, with a carbon mast, Dyneema rigging and membrane sails is particularly attractive. But even without these options which give the catamaran a boost - especially in light to moderate conditions - the Saona shows really attractive potential and above all, a platform with undeniable qualities for ocean cruising. And its interior is a call to live aboard, whilst the ergonomics of the steering position are really successful…

The new generation Lagoons have shown all their potential, their genuine nautical qualities, and the cruising pleasure they provide. With the Lagoon 42, you will in addition find top level ergonomics (notably at the very successful helm station) and clearly increased performance compared to previous generations. Tests under spinnaker in a good breeze (25 knots, full main and asymmetric spinnaker) showed a surprising ability to slip through the water, with steady speeds of over 16 knots! Remarkable for such a comfortable 42-footer… A real boat which is aimed both at families and couples looking for a boat which is as pleasant to live aboard as it is to sail…

2019 PROJECTS
OVNI CAT 48

Ovni monohulls have the reputation of being able to take their owners off the beaten tracks in complete safety, thanks to their aluminum hull. Reassured by this observation, and the fact that more and more long-term cruisers want to set off in a catamaran, the builder decided to launch a 48-foot catamaran, designed by the architects Mortain & Mavrikios. With the hulls in aluminum, but the deck and coachroof in composites, the builder has kept the weight to a reasonable level, to offer good performance under sail, a guarantee of safety when cruising. Again for safety, the company has done a lot of work on the deck plan, so that the cat will be easy to handle singlehanded.

ALLURES C47.9

Allures Yachting, specialist in aluminum ocean cruising monohulls, has decided to launch into multihulls, again for ocean cruising, and of course in aluminum.
The idea is finally quite simple – to use the excellent hulls of the Outremer 45 (both builders belong to the Grand Large Yachting group), developing them sufficiently to allow construction in aluminum, and extending them to 48 feet, while retaining the catamaran’s excellent performance. The deck will be in composites for lightness, insulation and easy maintenance. The builder is advertising a ready-to-sail boat weighing 12 tonnes, with nicely profiled stub keels, a guarantee of good performance, and above all allowing beaching…

It must be said that the Neel 45 offers an impressive liveable volume, lateral cabins with an unobstructed view of the sea, pleasure under sail and a passage through the water that only a trimaran can offer. BALI 4.1

With the 40-footer, the Bali range is now particularly consistent. Just like its big sisters, the 4.3, 4.5 and the new 5.4, the Bali 4.1 offers an open space between the cockpit and the saloon. A glazed door which folds away on electric rams allows the boat to go from the Cozy mode (closed) to the Lounge mode (open to the anchorage)... Once again on the 4.1 we find the forward cockpit – there is no trampoline on the Balis – and the very nice glazed doors which disappear totally to offer optimum ventilation.

BALI 4.3

When it came out, the builder called the Bali 4.3 ‘Loft’. It must be said that with this boat, the classic idea of a cruising catamaran has been completely re-designed: completely rigid forward cockpit, interior volume all in one block between the saloon and the cockpit, which can be closed with an ingenious door which disappears into the top of the coachroof, completely redesigned ventilation… The Bali 4.3 reconsiders the way of cruising and…it works!

RAPIER 400

Under sail, the Broadblue Rapier 400 shows good potential and performance worthy of its looks. But it’s when considering life aboard, that the 400 is surprising, with the combined nacelle/cockpit concept taken to the extreme. But it works, both under sail and in the anchorage, and living aboard is particularly pleasant. BALI 4.5

The first of the Balis caused a sensation when it came out, notably with its completely rigid forward cockpit… On our test (see Multihulls World no 139) we were lucky enough to have heavy weather conditions (force 6 – 7 and rough sea) and were thus able to completely validate the concept under sail!Another strong point of the Bali 4.5 is its well thought-out ergonomics, which make it a boat suitable for life aboard, as a couple or a family, or even a crowd!
