NEW-Lagoon 40

You can find out all about the major new boats from Lagoon this year by reading the full test carried out by our journalists in this edition of the magazine. The Lagoon 40 was presented to the public for the first time last September, at the Cannes Boat Show. And the least we can say is that this boat caused a stir. In line with the 42, Lagoon is offering a seaworthy boat which is rather pleasant to helm and above all capable of good averages under sail, as you will see in our test. A boat which is also easy to sail, with the rig positioned well aft and the self-tacking jib, now classic for the builder. But the Lagoon DNA remains very present, with comfortable, well-designed accommodation for life aboard, and notably the nice saloon/cockpit area. A clever boat which could well become one of Lagoon’s best-sellers in the years to come…

NEW-Nautitech Open 40

After having delivered a hundred Nautitech Open 40s, the builder Bavaria decided to give a new lease of life to its emblematic catamaran. To do this, the architect Marc Lombard and the builder’s R&D department have been involved, to redefine the interior accommodation. The result is stunning, with a feeling of space and quality of life aboard which makes setting off for a long voyage very appealing… As for the rest, the Nautitech remains an excellent fast, seaworthy catamaran.

NEW-Bali 4.0 Day Charter

Since its creation by Catana, the Bali brand has caused a considerable stir. With its ‘open’ concept taken to the extreme, its aft door which disappears completely to leave an incredible feeling of volume, and the elimination of the trampoline to offer a new living area, the Bali is resolutely oriented towards the quality of life aboard. The interest of the platform has led the builder to develop this day-charter version to meet strong demand from professionals. A version which can carry up to 28 passengers for the day…

NEW-Broadblue 405

At Broadblue, they have always liked cruising. And the catamarans on offer from the builder reflect this philosophy. This year, the builder is offering two new boats, with the Broadblue 346 and this 405. This new generation of catamarans claims to be above all easy to handle, comfortable and reassuring shorthanded or as a family crew. But the 405 is also a real cruiser, whose aim is to take its crew blue water cruising, if the fancy takes them. Well-situated in price terms, the Broadblue 405 is an interesting alternative for well-informed amateurs.

NEW-Leopard 45

The new Leopard 45, which appeared this year, is an attractive boat for several reasons. The design of the hulls is part of this, it sails particularly well and the balance of the platform is remarkable. This is important for a boat intended for owners looking for a catamaran which can take them to the other side of the world. The manufacturing quality of the interior accommodation sets off the new style of this catamaran, designed by the Simonis & Voogd Yacht Design office. We still like just as much the forward cockpit, accessible from the interior, a ‘must’ at anchor and an excellent way of ventilating the boat in the tropics…

NEW-Swiss 48

Discovered this summer, the Swiss 48 is a catamaran which is both reassuring and fun; a large part of the pleasure experienced aboard comes from the care taken with the deck plan (quality of control lines, winch sizes, readability and efficiency) which allows the superb fractional rig, supported by a superb mast and matching boom, to be easily handled! There is a real notion of build quality here, for this top-of-the-range boat which allows SwissCat entry to the exclusive club of top quality builders.

NEW-Saona 47

The Saona is a genuine ocean cruiser, and the version we tested, with a carbon mast, Dyneema rigging and membrane sails is particularly attractive. But even without these options which give the catamaran a boost - especially in light to moderate conditions - the Saona shows really attractive potential and above all, a platform with undeniable qualities. The steering position ergonomics are successful, providing safety and good visibility. Inside you will immediately feel at home, and there is no doubt that with such a level of comfort, many long-term cruising owners will find here the boat they are looking for.

For lovers of cruising ‘off the beaten tracks’, here is a brand new catamaran from Alubat, the specialist in the Ovni aluminum blue-water monohulls, which is launching into catamarans. Designed by the Mortain & Mavrikios architects’ office, the OvniCat 48 is a genuine ocean cruiser, with a lot of space aboard (the interior design is by Lasta Design) and a deck plan optimized for shorthanded cruising. With the hulls in aluminum, but the deck and coachroof in composites, the builder has kept the weight to a reasonable level, to offer good performance under sail, a guarantee of safety when cruising. NEW-Soubise 49

Tournier Marine, to whom we owe the very well-known series of Soubises, is back with not just one, but two new boats for 2018. The builder is now offering a brand new catamaran, available in cruising or day-charter versions. A fast boat, as always from Tournier Marine, but one which is also seaworthy and very reassuring at sea. Philippe Tournier, its designer, advertises his boat as sailing at close to the speed of the wind. 10 knots in 10 knots of breeze, to windward! As always at Tournier, the accommodation, whilst not being totally ‘custom’, remains ‘a la carte’, as do the appendages – stub keels or daggerboards. The construction in carbon-epoxy is also the guarantee of a controlled weight specification.

We will be able to see the latest boat from Aventura, the 43N, at the next International Multihull Boat Show at La Grande Motte, in April 2018. This catamaran is also the biggest to be built by the company, and is particularly aimed at owners looking for a boat capable of long-term cruising in excellent comfort. It must be said that there is a large amount of volume aboard, and the accommodation, designed by Lasta Design, is rather appealing. Like all the catamarans in the range, the Aventura 43N is built in Tunisia.

NEW-Dazcat 1295

Multimarine launched the new Dazcat 1295 last August. After its first trials, the boat showed impressive potential, even to the builder’s team, who are quite used to sailing on fast boats. The Dazcat 1295 is a genuine cruiser/racer, offering comfortable accommodation, but above all, impressive nautical qualities. It must be said that both designer and builder have worked hard to optimize weight centering, which can be felt immediately under sail. As for all the boats in the Dazcat range, each owner can have the boat of his or her dreams built according to the program planned.

NEW-VCat 44

Designed by François Perus, the vCat 44 is a 44-foot ocean cruiser which is fast and easy to sail shorthanded. This attractive project allows a lightweight boat (7.4 tonnes unladen – 9.9 tonnes fully laden) to be created, which could easily appeal to families looking for a boat to set off to discover the world. This concept’s ‘plus’ is its modular nature; between the aft cabin and the heads at the front of each hull, there is a 2-meter module, in which you can choose between various accommodation possibilities, which can easily be changed in just two hours. Clever! The first two examples are currently being finished.

NEW-Futura 49

The Futura concept, which we had previously only seen as a prototype, has now entered the production phase, following a few delays which are entirely understandable given the originality of the boat. This catamaran has in fact the unique feature of having a variable beam, going from 7.98m under way to 4.93m in port! An undeniable benefit for managing the boat, and for anyone who regularly goes into marinas. But this particularity doesn’t impact on it being a true cruising boat which is very liveable. The first boat in the series is scheduled to appear at the International Multihull Show at La Grande Motte…

NEW-Allures C47.9

Allures Yachting, specialist in aluminum ocean cruising monohulls, has decided to launch into multihulls, again for ocean cruising, and of course in aluminum.
The idea is finally quite simple – to use the excellent hulls of the Outremer 45 (both builders belong to the Grand Large Yachting group), developing them sufficiently to allow construction in aluminum, and extending them to 48 feet, while retaining the catamaran’s excellent performance. The deck will be in composites for lightness, insulation and easy maintenance. In either case, you can take advantage of the ingenious door separating the saloon and the cockpit, which disappears into the top of the coachroof and thus frees up a huge area… The Seawind 1260 is available in 3 or 4 double cabin versions, which allows it to meet the main requirements of families looking for a long-term cruising boat…

Lagoon 42

Since it was brought out, the Lagoon 42 has succeeded in satisfying its numerous owners. It must be said that during our test we really appreciated this modern, well-designed boat. It has good nautical qualities, is very pleasant in use, the ergonomics (notably that of the helm station) are great, and performance is clearly improved. Tests under spinnaker in a good breeze (25 knots, full main and asymmetric spinnaker) showed a surprising ability to slip through the water, with steady speeds of over 16 knots! Remarkable for such a comfortable 42-footer…

Bali 4.5

During our test (see Multihulls World 139), we were able to approve the concept of the forward platform - rigid and with no trampoline - on a particularly tough sail in a force 6 - 7 and a rough sea. The boat’s clever ergonomics – from the ventilation to the water and energy production – make this a catamaran completely suited to living aboard and adventures as a family. A surprising boat which deserves a test!
