In the middle of the 70s, an artist - Herb Kane – decided to reconstruct one of the famous pirogues which allowed the Pacific islands, including his native Hawaii, to be populated.

The aim then was to rediscover part of his roots and his culture. Hokule’a’s first voyage was to Tahiti, in 1976. The catamaran then went on to cruise extensively in the Pacific, even visiting Easter Island in 1999.
At the beginning of May, Hokule'a arrived in Newport News, at the invitation of the Mariner's Museum.
