The MOD70 trimaran Race4Water, which was sailing round the world as part of a scientific expedition whose aim is to take stock of the pollution of the world’s oceans by plastics, has capsized in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Having left from the Palau Archipelago, heading for the Chagos islands, the trimaran capsized whilst sailing in 18 - 20 knot winds. Nobody was injured in the accident, and the trimaran was saved, thanks to the intervention of the military personnel from the Diego Garcia base. Righting the MOD was a particularly tricky operation, as the float had to be filled with 8 tonnes of water to submerge it completely and succeed in the maneuver.
The boat was then loaded on to a ship, to be brought back to its base in Lorient and restored.
