There are a few rare top of the range boats on which weight saving is a priority. The example of Allegra is instructive in this respect. Allegra is a 78-foot catamaran, which will be launched in a few days’ time.

This multihull has been designed by Nigel Irens to be the missing link between racing and cruising boats. Aboard, everything has therefore been done to give the best performance, and thus...to try and limit as far as possible the weight carried. For example, concerning safety, the liferaft (Ultralitelifraft) is partly manufactured in carbon, which allows a 30% saving in weight. The same applies to the lifejackets (Kru Sport Pro), which are both light and comfortable to wear, to such a point that they will be worn by the crews in the coming Volvo Ocean Race.
