This category of multipowers has been the most active in terms of new models for several years now, thanks to the appearance of numerous new players, convinced – justifiably so - that the multihull formula meets a growing demand. These new models are most often characterized by their meticulous design. However, they also incorporate a wide variety of models - from the Open designed for shoal draft waters to the comfortable Cruiser that can accommodate you for weeks at a time on board, or even the catamaran designed just for big game fishing. The common theme: all these models are easy to handle thanks to their twin engines and their still modest size.

A Version Without Sails, but Still Electric

The HopYacht we tested back in the spring of last year enthralled us with a very simple concept: to offer a simple, economical multihull based around a large double bed which, of course, offers an unobstructed sea view. Though somewhat iconoclastic, this catamaran proved very easy to sail, with its large furling genoa. The brand’s French distributor, MV Yachting, has just announced an even more basic version, stripped of its rig. But of course, the electrical system is retained, providing 8 hours of autonomy at 4.2 knots (or just over 30 nautical miles), with no CO2 emissions or noise pollution.
For recharging, you’ll need to rely on a shore power outlet and/or 1,600 W of solar panels.

ArrowCat 320

Compact but Luxurious

 
 
The ArrowCat 320 is a successful model - now in its third generation. The smallest of the ArrowCat range, it features a luxurious finish - rare in compact powercats - such as a wooden steering wheel, or modern, full instrumentation on a carbon-look dashboard. Inside, the manufacturer has paid particular attention to the owner’s cabin. The 320 is powered by two outboard motors. The limited beam of 10 feet (3.05 m) allows the boat to be transported by road in certain countries such as the United States. In addition, Arrow Cat, based in Clearwater (Florida), also offers a little 20-foot powercat, the ArrowCat 20, but also, a 420, again equipped with outboards, and available in a Coupe or Flybridge version.

What’s so special about this new model? Its two-sided solar-powered wings, that unfold when under way: the photovoltaic cells facing the sea thus capture the sun’s reflection from the surface of the water. In total, the solar installation is capable of producing 6 kWp, a considerable figure for a catamaran just over 30 feet in length. At 6 knots, range is unlimited - during the day, weather permitting.
The second remarkable technological innovation is the car-like control interface.
A third point worthy of note: when folded, the solar wings, together with removable glass panels and canvas sections, transform the central part of the powercat into an enclosed space measuring 130 square feet (12 m²), called the deck cabin.

Aquila 32 Sport

Following the remarkable success of its larger models, Aquila Boats started looking at the under-10-meter powercat market a few years ago, now adding this 32-foot boat with a sportier design. Offered with three outboard power options, she reaches more than thirty knots, or even nearly forty with the twin 300 HP motors. The interior allows you to enjoy coastal cruising in good conditions with a headroom of 184 cm (6’) under the deck, a proper cabin and separate heads compartment. Seen from the side, you could easily be mistaken for thinking the updated V930 was a monohull motorboat like any other... but the view from ahead or astern, highlights the tunnel - very high that clearly separates the two hulls. With fine-entry bows and well-designed hulls, the V930 S2 is at ease at both 10 and 40 knots and can handle rough water. The layout - cockpit, helm station and galley are of course all on the same level. The 930 is available in an Open version or with enclosed helm station.

This small Dutch-built powercat is both environmentally friendly with its electric drivetrain (2 x 80 kW) and innovative with its curved central foil system. A long way from most electric catamarans whose speed remains very limited, the GreenPower 33 promises a cruising speed of 18 knots and even the ability to reach 22 knots. Three energy storage capacities are proposed to offer a range, depending on speed, from 20 to 150 miles. These batteries, supplied by CATL, come with a lifetime warranty. A standard two-phase or three-phase 380 V outlet is all that’s needed for overnight recharging. Although the GreenPower 33 has a double cabin and a heads compartment, it is above all a daycruiser.

Herley Boats 3400

Forever Green
New Zealand-based Herley Boats, who specialize in the construction of aluminum motorboats, has launched its first powercat with either internal combustion or a hybrid powertrain. The latter option sounds very attractive with its two 100-kW electric motors, 60 kWh of lithium-ion batteries and a 120-kW generator: at 6 knots, you get a nice range of 1,300 miles or 700 miles at 8 knots. The maximum speed is 20 knots.
(12 without the help of the generator). The forward windows, with reversed slope are perfect for maintaining good visibility and to limit the greenhouse effect. It would be great to be able to take full advantage of the foredeck with an additional pulpit. Inside, a fully equipped galley and a large main saloon open up onto a large cockpit. Each hull offers a double cabin and a bathroom. A third cabin – a single - is among the options.

Invincible 33

South Florida-based powerboat builder Invincible produces a number of powerboats, including a powercat range with six models up to 46 feet in length. The Invincible 33 is the smallest of these but is certainly not lacking in character: with its Morrelli & Melvin-designed hulls and Mercury Verado 400 outboards, the boat managed to reach speeds of over 50 knots on its first seatrials. The 33 turns without heeling outwards, and remains perfectly level at all speeds, without the need for any specific trim or ballast. This model is already seeing great success in the USA, and the Invincible brand is now distributed in Europe.

Highly-powered Open Fishing models are legion on the market - particularly in the United States. And we’re seeing more and more every year that are catamaran-based. And this is where Hammer Yachts are placing their bets. The general size remains very close to a standard Open Fishing model, with a beam of 11’10” (3.60 m) and length of 34’1” (10.40 m). On the other hand, the almost rectangular foredeck works well between the two sharp bows creating a very marked central tunnel, sculpted in a gullwing shape. The builder opted for foam/epoxy sandwich construction and carbon reinforcements. In addition to its lightness, the HammerCat 35 also has well-centered weight, and all of these characteristics combine to produce excellent seakeeping behavior. The deck design is as simple as it is neat: a good amount of space in the cockpit extends the “seating area”, which is nicely protected by the hardtop. The 2024 edition incorporates a new version featuring a cabin and has been christened the HH.

This semi-displacement catamaran is powered by twin fuel-efficient diesels or by a hybrid drivetrain with a range of 20 nm in all-electric mode. The hulls have been optimized for a cruising speed of between 13 and 18 knots. The philosophy of this model is good seaworthiness and a long range. The Explorer offers three cabins: 6 to 8 people can sleep on board. Following the success of the extended V1100 Discovery, the original model, the V1040, has been reconfigured as a sedan - and therefore without a flybridge. The circulation on board sees improved fluidity, and as for the large roof area, this allows for the installation of several solar panels.

Foils Between the Hulls!

 
 
It’s not just sailboats that are showing an interest (again) in foils... on the power-multihull market, load-bearing foils are becoming more and more common. We’ve seen them at Aquila Boats, and now, at Four Winns. Here they are aboard this new Insetta 35 IFC, built at St. Marys, in Georgia, USA. This powercat features asymmetrical hulls: chines outboard and vertical topsides inboard, a double tunnel and especially, the famous stainless-steel foils. The first one connects the hulls, while the two wings aft are quite distinct. The two engines - up to 2 x 450 HP - are slightly offset with the propellers set outside. Under way, the lift generated by the foils dampens the waves and allows the boat to turn by leaning into the curve. The 2024 edition features a new, even more ergonomic deck layout suited to fishing.

With the new range christened Yot, the focus is new 100% power models that are more compact, more accessible and, above all, available with outboard motor propulsion, which was not the case with the former Bali MY range. The first powercat presented was the Yot 36. Its dimensions involve a limited beam (a real plus when looking for a marina slip), yet it features two folding side platforms. MY4.S

An Elegant Sport Top Model

 
 
No flybridge for this entry-level MY: on an aesthetic level, that’s pretty successful – to the point that the MY4.S featured as the cover photo of this special issue three years ago. The decision to omit the flybridge limits the air draught, which opens up the possibility of a river program, but the only problem is that the standard European lock size is 5.05 m (16’7”) wide maximum... just a couple of inches (5 cm) too much for the MY4.S, which is a shame! This model features an interior that corresponds to the standards of her bigger sisterships: everything is therefore being done to ensure that the perceived quality is of the highest level. The seakeeping performance of the MY4.S – it picks up on the very successful hulls of the 37 – are quite flattering, with a cruising speed of 15 to 17 knots and 21 to 24 knots top speed.

This powercat built by Asia Catamarans uses a sailing catamaran platform with very narrow hulls (designed by Alan Carwadine) and advocates stripping everything bare to keep to a very tight weight limit - 2 to 3 tons depending on the version. Two simple outboard motors of 50 to 60 HP are sufficient to propel the Stealth 36E at 25 knots. Cruising speed consumption is surprisingly low: 1.6 US gal (6 liters)/hour at 8 knots and 4.2 US gal (16 liters)/hour at 16 knots.

An Innovative Powercat Sedan

 
 
As soon as it was launched in Croatia back in the spring, the Makai 37 sailed to Palma, Venice, Cannes and finally, Greece… so this new model has been perfectly tested on its semi-offshore trip. The Italian design of Emanuele Rossi (ERYD Design) offers this powercat sedan sporty and attractive lines. The catamaran concept is of course exploited so as to offer reduced fuel consumption, impeccable lateral stability and a level of comfort pertaining to a much larger boat. The tunnel between the hulls has been designed to create a shock-absorbing air cushion in rougher seas. The deck plan provides access to the water - or the beach - at the (Kevlar®-reinforced) bow and at the stern. The engine legs can be raised, allowing the boat to take the ground with total safety. This model will be available in a GT version and a bigger sistership, the M42, is scheduled to be unveiled in 2025.

With its specially designed hulls to limit drag - and therefore save fuel - the V1100 Discovery is above all easy to handle, stable and versatile. This model, just like the other powercats in the range (which extends to a 46-footer) was designed for offshore fishing, no doubt about it, with a transferable 12-year guarantee. On board, you can count on a plethora of lockers, livewells and rod holders, while the sunbathing area is limited to a few seats. On the 37, you can fish from any point on deck. The 37’s powerful drivetrain (4 outboards from 300 to 450 HP) combined with two narrow hulls and a relatively narrow platform guarantees excellent performance, very safe behavior in heavy seas and a respectable range of 600 nautical miles. The 37 offers the possibility to fish from any point on the deck. As an option, you can even have a lateral door.

Asymmetrical and Transportable

 
 
Although it boasts 30% more living space than the previous generation, the C108 built in Burlington (between Vancouver and Seattle) is only 10’8” (3.25 m) wide to allow road transport - the weight of the catamaran and its aluminum trailer still totals 6.25 tons, however. The asymmetrical hulls developed by Larry Graf since 2008 ensure a good passage through the sea: they were designed to be propelled by two outboards of differing power, allowing to choose your fuel consumption. Inside, a large galley and a saloon that can accommodate five people. The cockpit completes the rest of the nacelle. Down below, three berths (including a double) and a bathroom are provided. The builder also offers a larger model – the C120.
