Whisper 40

The Whisper 50’s little sistership is announced for 2026. This will be a compact 40-foot powercat that promises respectable comfort thanks to its voluminous nacelle and three cabins. The deck makes full use of the available space - the hulls are even invisible from the stern. Beneath this generous accommodation are two slender hulls optimized to generate a minimum drag between 5 and 15 knots.
Thanks to the combination of a large surface area of solar panels, a 160-kWh battery bank and two 80 kW motors, the 40 should be able to provide unlimited range at speeds of up to 5/6 knots. To keep up with the target cruising speed of 10 knots, the generator will eventually have to be called upon. The manufacturer predicts that this hybrid use will account for only 10% of time under way.

The contemporary and dynamic design features sculpted topsides and stepped bows. The flybridge is particularly large, with a lounge, a sunbathing area, the essential cockpit and a proper outdoor galley. A forward cockpit further enhances the exterior spaces. This weekender presented at Cannes is built in Tunisia. It is made of aluminum, an original choice, as this material would more typically be used for small workboats or large ocean-going vessels. The Wama 42 XL guarantees excellent performance thanks to powerful twin outboard motors or a pair of diesel inboards, and foils. The maximum speed is announced as 42 knots (we reached 38 knots during our test off Cannes).
Although the superstructure is fairly discreet, it manages to accommodate a comfortable interior. The helm station is very attractive and even includes a sunroof. The shipyard offers two to four cabins in the hulls.
Designed primarily for recreational boating, the spacious aft platform offers direct access to the water. A second version of this model is offered by the yard – the Wama 42, which is narrow and uses a composite construction.

Based at St. Augustine in Florida, Front Runner Boatworks is well known in the United States for its center console Open boats, and though the range which extends from 33 to 47 feet is comprised mostly of monohulls, there are two powercats, the 37 Cat and of course the 43 Cat that we’re looking at here. This model was presented as a world preview at FLIBS in Fort Lauderdale back in November, and then we got to discover it at MIBS in Miami. The 43 Cat has a chined hull and bulbous bows designed to guarantee smooth and comfortable performance at high speed even in big seas. The deck plan has been designed primarily for big game fishing, but the manufacturer offers multiple customization options, such as the HTX version featuring an enclosed helm station, wraparound cockpit seating and sleeping accommodation.

The HammerCat 45 presents lines with narrow hulls at the waterline, a gullwing-shaped nacelle sitting high above the water, and the famous truncated bow. The latter is tilting and integrates a staircase for a direct access to the sea... or onto the sand. The builders are offering several deck plans so that their HammerCat 45 can be used as a fast offshore cruiser, for sports fishing, as a dive boat, etc. As far as the engines are concerned, there’s no messing about: twin 600 HP outboards are offered, or a pair of 440 HP Yanmar diesel inboards. So it comes as no surprise that 55 knots is within easy reach... but the hull is capable of motoring at 30/35 knots in excellent conditions of comfort with much more reasonable fuel consumption figures than those of a monohull.

The Vandal Marine brand was created by Dutch manufacturer Tenderworks, who specialize in tenders for megayachts. The main idea behind the project was to bring to market a true “all-terrain” powercat, inspired by workboats and featuring an innovative design with asymmetrical hulls linked by a central foil capable of optimizing the equation that combines speed/consumption/passage though the water. The aluminum hulls are protected by impressive thick scantlings, and the welded parts throughout the deck are impressive. At 20 knots, fuel consumption is reduced by 30%, giving a range of over 200 miles. It’s worth noting that despite the foiling design, the Vandal is still perfectly capable of taking the ground – you’re either an explorer or you’re not...

Turkish shipyard VisionF Yachts had got us rather accustomed to large, quiet powercats (even if the Barbie pink livery of a recent 82 was pretty eye-catching a couple of years ago in Cannes), and a Forever Green approach with the choice, for some models, of aluminum hulls and hybrid propulsion. It’s no exaggeration to say that the VisionF Superfast 46 stands out completely from the manufacturer’s catalog: This all-carbon craft is in fact capable of reaching no less than 80 knots and maintaining this crazy speed for two hours. As an option, the hydraulic steering is coupled with joystick controls to optimize maneuverability at high speeds.

At Cannes, Italian shipyard Bluegame presented the latest addition to its second powercat range, the BGF45. This multipower is directly inspired by the prototypes built for Team Oracle for the America’s Cup. The BGF45 incorporates the prototype’s foil technology but has abandoned (at least for now) hydrogen/electric propulsion in favor of Volvo IPS motors capable of propelling the powercat at speeds of up to 35 knots. The 45 offers a very sleek design where carbon reigns supreme. In addition to two large sun lounging areas, it offers two cabins and even quarters for the crew.

These feature very large lateral windows, while the forward windows of the coachroof are vertical in order to integrate the forward door more easily - all these windows are made in tempered glass for maximum clarity and to give good longevity. Inside, the 46PC is available in a 3 or 4-cabin version with special attention having been paid to comfort: wide, comfortable berths accessible from the side, increased floor space and improved interior lighting. In addition to its HH sailing range, the Hudson shipyard also offers power catamarans under the name of Hudson Powercat. While the silhouette of earlier models differed markedly from the sailing range, this is no longer the case with the elegant Hudson 47, which features inverted bows and a rounded coachroof top. As for the hulls, we’re dealing with some heavyweight stuff: like those of the Hudson 63 also announced, they are signed by Stimson Marine Design and use the same CFD tools as those on the America’s Cup AC75s, no less! Inside, there’s a large interior helm station with an attractive two-seater helm chair, and the owner’s suite takes its place in the starboard hull.

This model has the difficult task of replacing the Aquila 44, one of the very few powercats to have sold over 200 examples... On the water, with its twin 480 HP motors, the 46 reached 21 knots in remarkable comfort. We really like the huge flybridge, accessible via two staircases – one fore and one aft. Prestige Yachts already has two monohull ranges, making them one of the undisputed world leaders in the sector, with over 4,000 examples produced over the past 30 years. The launch of the M48 was therefore a nice surprise for powercat fans! The ambition is that the new range which will soon represent 40% of the brand’s turnover. The Prestige M48, unveiled in the summer of 2022, is the first model. It features very clean lines and respects the brand’s design - it is still the Italian studio Garroni Design in charge. The living area includes a saloon, the galley and a helm station. The large forward cabin is a success. In the hulls, the cabins embedded deep between the central floor and the bottom of the nacelle are unprecedented on board powercats of this category.

The second model in the new Coupe range stands out from the usual power catamaran weekenders in that it is much larger - this segment of the market typically ranges from 36 to 42 feet. So, Aquila Power Catamarans is taking a daring gamble with this 46, which has just two cabins. This size corresponds to classic cruisers with much greater sleeping capacity, or to large powercats dedicated to fishing. The second original feature of this new 46 Coupe is that its powertrain - proportionally a little less powerful than that aboard the 42 - is available either outboard or diesel-powered. Here again, the manufacturer is thinking outside the box, so much so that there’s even a foiling system fitted as standard. The deck layout, like that of the 42 Coupe, features a vast aft cockpit with a central passage through the nacelle to the bow-rider.

Archipelago 47

An Aluminum Powercat for Extreme Programs

 
 
Constructed in aluminum and with ocean passagemaking capabilities, this new powercat built in the UK is perfectly suited for expeditions and cruising far from the beaten track. The builder has taken great care to combine robustness and comfort - the interior is fitted out with the greatest of care and is even equipped with an underfloor heating system, contrasting with the “utilitarian” appearance conjured up in large part by the forward windows whose slope is reversed. Note the large trampolines up front, now a very atypical feature aboard a powercat. Our only one regret with the deck plan is that there are no footbraces (much less any sort of bulwark...) on the side decks. The nacelle remains very open to the cockpit - the latter, decked with synthetic teak and its after end becoming a neat aft platform. A large part of the coachroof is taken up by a roof rack, which is very practical for carrying kayaks or paddleboards. The builder also offers hybrid and electric propulsion systems and now offers a complete range comprising 5 models.

Aimed at the high-end day charter market, this powercat was designed by Yacht Design Collective and Damien Bovie Design. The layout is 100% day charter, with an extra-large nacelle - completely open at the stern and towards the bow-rider thanks to a glass door, which can remain open in fair weather. Each hull is nonetheless fitted with a double berth, plenty of storage space and a heads compartment. The composite construction combined with the somewhat stripped-down layouts ultimately translates into a displacement of just 11 tons. The twin FPT motors, each rated at 480 HP, have little trouble propelling the Sunmare at 30 knots. On board, the Sunmare’s excellent ability to move through the waves and the careful attention to soundproofing are particularly noteworthy. The yard also offers an electrically propelled version with several hours’ range.

The Omaya 50 is one of the newcomers to the market, selling not only living space - in this case 1,615 square feet (150 square meters) - but also luxury, as evidenced by the first renderings of the interior. The overall design is not to be outdone, featuring rather clean lines. The large saloon can accommodate 10 people at table - in either dining or coffee configuration. The hulls can house a huge Owner’s suite to port and two guest cabins to starboard, or four cabins. The forepeaks can be customized according to the captain’s wishes. On deck, there are two cockpits connected via side-decks or through the nacelle’s forward door. A large aft platform completes the sugarscoops. The flybridge is accessible via two staircases.

For the time being, the 47 Molokai is the largest model in the Offshore range. It is capable of taking you offshore for big-game fishing in complete safety. Inspired by the Hawaiian seafaring spirit as well as the world of offshore racing, this powerful new model is not only impressive for its sporty lines, but also for its power (up to 4 x 450 HP on the transom!). The construction incorporates carbon bulkheads fore and aft to ensure optimum rigidity. Vandal 50 Explorer

With its pronounced step in the deck line, its inverted forward windows and the ski-shaped hull tunnel, the Vandal 50 Explorer is designed to be able to sail anywhere and even take the ground without risk of damage, since its designers have opted for an outboard powertrain. In terms of build quality, this is a sturdy boat - the reputation of Dutch shipyards being well established... The dinghy issue has been cleverly dealt with using a dedicated high-up location at the back of the enormous flybridge. Capable of reaching speeds of over 40 knots, the 50 Explorer is equipped with a foil assist system that saves 30% on fuel.

Rapido 500 Eco Power Cat

Very Light Equals a Modest Powertrain

Rapido Trimarans, as the name suggests, builds three-hulled boats - until now driven by sails... The launch of a powercat therefore comes as a surprise! What is equally surprising is that the yard has opted for a very lightweight platform with particularly narrow hulls (maximum width 96 cm / 38¾”!), with the result that a modest powertrain of twin 100 HP motors should make it capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots. As for the superstructures, they take up the entire width and provide a passage to the foredeck via a front door. The draft of less than 1 m (39”) allows access to the most remote bodies of water and the majority inland waterway systems. With a view to reducing fuel consumption, the shipyard is offering a kite option. A 40-foot model is on the drawing board.
