These critters have the strength to open a nut with a single clamp of their claw... So imagine what they could do to a careless finger!
During the day, they hide away under the roots of the palm trees, leaving only strange tracks on the sand. But as soon as the sun goes down, it’s as if a silent army has taken over the island. They advance, relentlessly, eyeing our provisions or pilfering a piece of leftover fruit. Some sailors swear they have even seen them inviting themselves on board boats, attracted by the smell of dried fish.
In this nocturnal chaos, it’s impossible to ignore these alien-looking monsters. In Palau, Kiribati or the Tuamotus, anyone who comes across them will immediately recognize them as the supreme night-time lords of the beaches. But don’t worry, these huge crabs can’t move any faster than sloths. You’d have plenty of time to run away... although you wouldn’t need to, as these beasts are no more dangerous than small crabs - they’re just looking for coconuts!
